Influence

Cereal Mascot Reunion, 2007
Helicopt-O-Bot
Troublemaker, 2007
Presents Opening Children, 2007
YesterdayCube, 2007

I like Rob Sheridan. I first heard about him because he is the professional photographer for my favorite band Nine Inch Nails. While he does take great photos for the band, it was his illustrations that ultimately caught my attention. I saw them on his blog (http://www.rob-sheridan.com/sketchblog/) and found them intriguing. Some are extremely detailed, some are just weird, and some plain ridiculous. But that’s exactly what I enjoy about the illustrations.

Rob’s work inspires me because it’s original, interesting, and funny. And that’s what I hope my work is and will be. I enjoy creating art that makes others laugh and I enjoy creating art that makes others think. That’s exactly what Rob’s work makes me do. For instance I look at Cereal Mascot Reunion and can’t help but laugh to myself. Something about seeing a bunch of cereal icons sitting around drinking beer and looking miserable is humorous in an odd way. Then there’s YesterdayCube, which shows you how weird Rob’s mind can be, and then you have Presents Opening Children, which shows you how creepy Rob’s mind can be.

I connect with Rob’s work because it can be strange at times, like my work. I appreciate it when an artist can take an idea from their head (no matter how odd it may seem) and present it to others without fear of ridicule.

I think your last statement is pretty telling. Also, I did laugh. I've never seen Sheridan's work before. I got a kick out of the "Cereal Mascot Reunion". Sadly, those were the characters of my youth.
